Check your Mailbox: Tax Identification Number

When you check your mailboxes at the Student Residence, in Mondrian Suites, or at your registered home in Berlin these days, you will find a letter from the city of Berlin with your Tax identification number (Steueridentifikationsnummer).

This 11-digit identification number ensures unique identification within the tax system and every person successfully registered in a German city receives it.

If you intend to work in paid employment (in a part-time job or an internship) in Germany, your employer will need this number as soon as you begin new employment or before receiving your first salary. Your employer will surely ask for it. Please do not lose this document; it is very complicated to have the number issued again. If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail Anne Strauss (anne.strauss@nyu.edu) or stop by the Student Life office.
